Paper Minecraft Skins, Game Modes and Chat Commands

Paper Minecraft does not use texture packs or imported skin files. The game is one Scratch project, and its character looks and settings come from options Griffpatch built in. This post covers the parts you can change: your skin, the game mode and the slash commands typed into chat.

Choosing a skin

In version 10.5 Griffpatch added skin selection to the New Game screen. The skin you pick is stored in your save, so it comes back when you load that world again. The head sprite in the project holds several looks, including the classic Steve, an Alex head and a crowned version. You can also change skin later with the /skin command.

Armour changes your look as well. The game has Iron, Gold and Diamond helmets, chestplates and leggings, crafted the same way as in the original game. Leather pieces exist in the item list, but they have no crafting recipe.

Opening chat

Press T to talk or type a command. Commands start with a slash. Type /help for the list inside the game. Some maps lock commands, and then the game replies that the command is not available on this map.

Game modes

The /gamemode command accepts four modes:

• survival: health, hunger and hostile mobs.
• creative: the creative inventory, sorted into tabs for building blocks, decoration, redstone, miscellaneous, food, tools, combat and materials. The world options also include a fly mode.
• adventure: the third mode, listed by the game as Adventure Mode.
• peaceful: listed as Peaceful Mode.

Useful commands

/weather rain, snow, blizzard or clear	Sets the weather (rain and snow were added in versions 11.1 and 11.2)
/setspawn	Sets your respawn point where you stand
/kill	Kills your character
/killall	Removes all mobs
/clear	Empties your inventory
/sound	Turns sound on or off (also the M key)
/lighting, /xray	Switch the lighting mode and the x-ray view
/keylag 0 or 1	Turns the game's key lag trick off or on
/lock	Locks a map to its maker; /lock 0 unlocks it

Spawn eggs

The creative inventory includes spawn eggs. There are eggs for Sheep, Pig, Cow, Chicken, Wolf, Villager, Zombie, Creeper, Spider, Skeleton, Zombie Pigman and Enderman. There are also eggs that build a village house, farm house, blacksmith or well where you place them. That makes it easy to set up a test area without walking around the world to find one.

Saving your choices

Press O to save. The game gives you a save code as text, and your skin goes into that code. To come back, choose Load Game and paste the code with Ctrl+V. Version 11.3 changed the save format so large worlds no longer hit Scratch's 10,000 character string limit.
