Redstone and Farming in Paper Minecraft: What Exists

Paper Minecraft has a working redstone set, but it is smaller than in the 3D game. There are no observers, hoppers, comparators or daylight sensors. This post lists what is in the game's recipe and item tables, so you know what you can build before you start.

Redstone parts and recipes

Redstone Ore needs an Iron Pickaxe and drops Redstone Dust. Nine dust make a Block of Redstone, and the block breaks back into nine dust.

Pistons can face up, down, left or right, and repeaters have both plain and directional versions. A note from Griffpatch in the recipe list says the redstone torch recipe gives a normal torch "for now", so there is no separate redstone torch.

See it working first

The quickest way to learn the system is to open Example Worlds from the main menu. Griffpatch included maps called "Redstone Elevator 2", "Hidden Piston Staircase" and "Hidden Cave Entrance". Each uses pistons and switches in 2D, and you can take them apart to see how the wiring runs.

Farming wheat

Farming is manual. There are no automatic harvesters, but the parts are simple:

• Breaking Tall Grass drops Wheat Seeds.
• Hoes come in wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond (two of a material over two sticks), and the game has a Farmland block for crops.
• Wheat has eight growth stages before it is fully grown and can be harvested.
• A Bone crafts into 3 Bonemeal.
• Three Harvested Wheat make Bread. A Cake needs three wheat, two Sugar, an Egg and three Milk.

Sugar comes from Sugar Cane. Milk is a bucket item, and a Bucket is three Iron Ingots in a V shape.

Animals and food sources

Pigs, Sheep, Cows and Chickens are the passive mobs, and Villagers live in villages that the world generator places. Wool is needed for beds and also crafts into String, which goes into Bows. Arrows are Flint over a Stick over a Feather, and one craft gives 4. Wolves have a tamed form that the mob list calls Dog.

Blocks for storage

Iron, Gold, Diamond and Emerald can all be packed nine to a block and unpacked again. That saves chest space. A Chest is eight planks around an empty centre.
